Earlier in November, the 2000th patient was treated at The Thornbury Gamma Knife Centre since its opening in 2008. Staff at the centre presented patients treated on the day with flowers to mark the landmark. Since the centre’s inception it has always sought to enhance and improve patients lives and the continuing success of the unit working under the Supra Centre status with Sheffield Teaching Hospital is adding to these benefits for patients.
The centre was the fourth Gamma Knife Centre to become operational in the UK. Since, both Thornbury and Queen Square Gamma Knife centres have established reputations for the service and patient experience offered. A wide range of indications are treated with the significant advantages the Gamma Knife offers including:
- It’s an outpatient procedure that takes less than a day
- It doesn’t hurt
- It doesn’t require incisions, so there’s no general anaesthesia and no risk of bleeding or infection
- It can treat even the most challenging, hard-to-reach brain tumours and abnormalities that traditional brain surgery can’t
- Side effects, such as headaches and nausea, are rare and usually temporary
- Patients can return to normal activities the next day
In 2016, both centre were successful in becoming the only two centres of excellence (Supracentres) for NHS England Queen Square in partneship with UCLH and Thornbury working in partnership with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Lynne Brooks, Chief Executive stated “Both centres have grown from strength to strength and we are now busier than ever. When tThornbury opened it was one of a small number of such centres in the UK but since, the treatment offered has become more recognised, accepted and widely used with other centres with QSRC amongst them opened. We are very pleased to be working closely with our NHS Trust partners providing access to this technology and helping patients achieve the best possible outcomes. I am proud of the dedication of our teams and their efforts in always going the extra mile to provide the highest quality of patient care and experience.
