The treatment of brain cancer in the UK has taken a big step forward after the NHNN took delivery of the country’s newest Gamma Knife® technology.
The installation of the 20 tonne piece of kit took all the precision of a military operation involving six lifts from a 500 tonne crane, a road closure and careful management of radioactive sources.
The Gamma Knife, manufactured by Elekta, will focus primarily on treating patients for brain metastases – tumours that develop in the brain from cancers elsewhere in the body.
